Les Dames d’Escoffier International Board Visits Monterey Chapter for Bi-Annual Meeting
Salad Bowl of America Hosts Women’s Leadership Forum
MONTEREY, CA (February 26, 2025) – The Monterey Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier International (LDEI) recently hosted the organization's International Board for its bi-annual in-person meeting this February. This gathering marked a pivotal moment for the chapter as it continues its active recruitment drive to expand its membership and enhance its impact within the region.
LDEI strategically selects board meetings for chapters that are experiencing transformative growth, and Monterey is no exception. With an ambitious goal of expanding from 60 to 90 members by year’s end, the chapter is harnessing the region’s rich culinary landscape--home to olive growers, pioneering winemakers, and innovative food producers--to fuel its momentum. The Monterey Chapter is elevating and empowering women in these fields, solidifying its place as a powerhouse of progress within the global network.

"Hosting the LDEI International Board in Monterey was an incredible opportunity to showcase the vibrancy of the local chapter and the breadth of talent within the community," said Sheila Crye, LDEI Monterey Chapter Board Liaison. "They are excited to build on this momentum as they work towards their recruitment goals and continue fostering meaningful connections among women in the industry."
The weekend featured engaging discussions, leadership roundtables and immersive experiences that highlighted Monterey’s rich agricultural and culinary landscape. The Monterey Chapter is currently undergoing a leadership transition, as longtime President Mary Chamberlain, who has led for 17 years, passes the torch to new President Rachel Mueller.
Fundraising efforts are also evolving, with a shift from traditional gala fundraisers to innovative event formats, including a potential culinary competition spotlighting local figs and a cookbook-writing symposium designed to engage stakeholders. Upcoming LDEI Online programs were also discussed, including an event featuring Dame Sonthe Bokas Burge on the Mediterranean diet and the highly anticipated M.F.K. Fisher Symposium, which will feature celebrated writers Ruth Reichl and Dame Toni Tipton-Martin.
The visit to Monterey allowed the LDEI Board to witness firsthand the strength of the local food industry and the opportunities for collaboration within the international network.
"Gathering in Monterey showcased the power of LDEI in action,” said Kate Howell, LDEI 3rd VP. “With new leadership, a strong recruitment drive, and impactful sponsorships, the chapter is creating real opportunities for women in food, beverage, and hospitality. Seeing the region’s thriving women-led businesses reinforced the strength of our global network and mission.”
As part of its commitment to growth and inclusion, the Monterey Chapter is actively seeking new members who share LDEI’s mission of education, philanthropy, and mentorship. Those interested in joining are encouraged to learn more at ldei.org.
